How are Speech and Language different?

Simply put speech is the ability to articulate and pronounce words where language is the ability to understand it and use is appropriately. The American Speech-Hearing-Language Association states that "Language is made up of socially shared rules that include: what words mean; how to make new words; how to put words together and what word combinations are best in what sitatuations", while they define speech as the verbal means of communicating which consists of articulation, voice and fluency.
