Word Decoding and Comprehension

One predictor of a child’s comprehension skills is his or her ability to decode words. Students that focus on word decoding and have poor word recognition skills, spend more time focusing on decoding words and little time on actually thinking about the meaning of the text. Helping children learn high frequency words can be a big help in reducing the amount of time decoding and increase the amount of comprehension achieved.
